    Deer Crossing by Abraham Hunter

Years ago I visited Cades Cove, Tennessee for the first time. I arrived very early before sunrise and was shocked at all of the wildlife that seemed to be fearless of my presence. I began snapping photos of a very large whitetail buck beside the road. He was so majestic in the dense fog. Right then, years ago, I gained the inspiration for this painting. I’m so excited that I now get to share it with you! The moon is rising on a crisp early October night during the peak of the whitetails mating season. A farmer slowly drives down a gravel road after the days work. The only sound is the classic oldies country station crackling over the radio as the gravel rumbles beneath the old trucks tires. He slows to stop, as this proud buck gracefully races across the road in front of the glow of his headlights. This is the same majestic buck I saw all those years ago. I saved him in my memory for when I could immortalize on canvas the feeling he gave me of being so close to one of God’s creatures. Everyone who has taken this gravel road in Cades Cove can pick out exactly where it is. I hope you feel as though you are driving down that road in that old truck every time you look at “Deer Crossing.”

  • Moonlit Camp

    September 2015

On a misty Fall evening deep in a hardwood forest, the moon begins to cast its gentle rays through the canopy of leaves and softly glistens of the water as it laps against the shore. The campers are probably out gathering more firewood to keep the fire going well into the night. There will be s'mores made from roasting marshmallows over the fire and guitar playing to warm the heart and stir the soul. I've tried to capture this moment in time for you to enjoy for ever. I hope Moonlit Camp blesses you with its message, and that you never take for granted all that Our Creator as so graciously given us..

When I close my eyes to shut out the noise and business of the day it’s hard to find a place to “go” in my mind where I can be totally at ease – at peace with my self and my life. When I do try to shut it out and go to my happy spot internally, somehow this is what I see in my mind – there is this path leading through the dunes and flowers where the sand is still warm from the sun, and up ahead the moon is drawing me forward to the edge of the water where I can walk and be alone, where no one will interfere with my thoughts. It’s a time to “be still” and soak in the light. I let all my senses tune in to the truth – “it is well with my soul.” I hope this scene can become such a place for you – a place to meditate – a place to simply BE – your own personal “SANCTUARY.”
